4 NOV. 2026 · At the intersection of Broad and Main Streets, a five-alarm tenement fire races up the stair shaft from the cellar, threatening to destroy the flimsy building. After Mrs. McCollum escapes with her baby, she alerts Chief Bob Cody and rookie fireman Tim Collins that neighbors remain trapped in the top-floor rear apartment. When tenant Joe Ferguson appears fully dressed in an overcoat, necktie, and shined shoes claiming he was awake packing to move, Cody and Collins grow suspicious of his story—especially after he reveals a five-hundred-dollar insurance policy on his furniture. Using a floodlight at the rear of the building, the firefighters spot Ferguson's wife hanging unconscious over the fifth-floor window sill. With ordinary ladders unable to reach through the narrow angle between the buildings, Tim Collins prepares to scale the burning structure with a scaling ladder and a lifeline. Finally, Chief Cody delivers a safety assignment on inspecting homes to properly collect and dispose of waste paper hazards.
