28 ABR. 2020 · The following text "Love and the Paraliterary: On Barbara Kruger’s "Picture/Readings" by the writer, poet, essayist, and curator William J. Simmons originally appeared in Flash Art No. 329 (February – March 2020). Barbara Kruger’s work has come to represent a host of negative affects for art historians and critics, and it is in those dark, painful, and discomfiting emotions that the work finds its criticality and deconstructive qualities. So we are told, or perhaps, ironically, indoctrinated — fictions become history, indeed. We understand Kruger’s work to be oppositional, paranoid, skeptical, probing, threatening, refusing, dismantling, denuding, castigating, withholding, chastising, ridiculing, combative, dissecting, extracting, exposing, embarrassing, accosting, and detached. In many activist contexts, these qualities are necessary, but I wonder if they take a toll, if they produce stasis instead of opportunities. I have always thought of Kruger’s use of text as written on the wind, as it were, somewhere between the page and the pen and an untethered gust. - William J. Who decides which artists get shown, which critic gets printed, and which dealers get rich? Who decides which art world figures will attain world-class stature, joining the ranks of those who have a shot at eventually entering art history? For the vast majority of artists and others who hope to be able to contribute to, or take from the art historical continuum, the ‘system’ will forever remain a mystery. From certain quarters, the tastemakers are viewed as an impenetrable pantheon. And an ever-widening circle of bitter outcasts sees these tastemakers, whoever they are, as a corrupt cabal that responds not to quality, but to money.

"Ho incontrato Jeff Koons nel 1986, a New York, in occasione della sua mostra da Ileana Sonnabend. La mostra non mi piacque; anzi, fu un pugno allo stomaco (purtroppo, talvolta, con l’arte che mi colpisce, in negativo o in positivo, ho reazioni fisiche, di dolore o di piacere). Con me c’era ovviamente Helena, ma anche Giacinto di Pietrantonio, che invece apprezzò subito la mostra e cercò di spiegarmela. Io, poco convinto, tornai a vederla tre volte. E Ileana, ma soprattutto Antonio, il suo braccio destro, rimasero stupiti da tanta frequentazione. Gradualmente questi oggetti kitsch iniziarono a entrare in me. Incominciai a capire il cinismo sentimentale di Koons, il suo desiderio di piacere a tutti, ma proprio a tutti, grazie a messaggi e immagini popolari. Lui sapeva – da grande esperto naturale di marketing – che la gente è attratta da ciò che conosce o frequenta. Dino Gavina fu un personaggio mitico dell’arte e del design. Negli anni Cinquanta, non so per quale motivo, essendo lui nato vicino Bologna, aprì un grande stabilimento per mobili di alta qualità e design a Foligno, a pochi chilometri dalla mia casa di Trevi (a pensarci bene forse per beneficiare di alcuni privilegi dell’allora Cassa per il Mezzogiorno).
