7 AGO. 2021 · Mrs Ajongbade: I will like to express myself in Yoruba language,to ensure clarifications. Religion in Yoruba has many superstitions ,and superstition is derived from many religions and Is believed to be true whereas its not totally true, just like "parables" its derived to teach and didn't actually happen in reality.
First, about the Egungun festival (odun egungun) Yorubas believe in their religion that masquerades are from another world (Heaven),and everyone knows that surely the regalia are been worn by humans, if not an empty regalia can't walk about the street flogging people, neither can an empty regalia talk .
Lordsilva:we've so much superstitions, like that of not Washing clothes at night ,whosoever does such is a widow.
Mrs Ajongbade:Everything of that is a stylish method not an abomination ,its to teach good hygiene and cleanliness,Yorubas believe when you wash at night it won't be fit to wear the next day thereby giving offensive smells, thats why they come to conclude that its a widow who does it.
Lordsilva:There's this interesting one that we shouldn't look behind us with our head upside down and bent between our legs when in the market.
Mrs Ajongbade: All those are meaningless stories,if you don't have supernatural gifts(we oju) you can't see the abnormal.
If you don't remove the mucous from the eyes of a dog and put in your eyes you can't see spirits nor dead, or if you don't wash your face with the water used to bath a dead body you can't see anything extraordinary.
In those days some used blade to incise their face and wash it wound with the water used to bath the dead and they see out of human eyes and imaginations.
Lordsilva:There's this one they say we must sweep the floor before we sleep else one will see spirit of bad luck
Mrs Ajongbade: All those are to teach cleanliness, they don't want people to sleep on an unswept floor to avoid ant bites and uncomfortable sleep caused by sands.
Lordsilva: How about this one that states when we're done sweeping we shouldn't not keep brooms heads up.
Mrs Ajongbade: For that particular one ive a lot to say about it ,but I will do so in Yoruba language cus I can't narrate it fluently in English:
In some state ,there are some households that worship Ṣọ̀pọ̀na (or Shapona) .
Shapona is the god of smallpox in the Yoruba religion.Thats measles these worshippers of shapona have a scared spot to appease shapona and broom is the sacred symbol to recognize the sacred spot .
If you get to Oyo state ,like me conversing with you its abominable to flog me or the kids I birth with a broom. whosoever flogs me with a broom even when I've stated its forbidden in my tribe will suffer from small pox but if he/she is unaware and ignorantly does flog me with a broom I will be afflicted with smallpox.
And again the worshiped broom is intentionally sitted upside down on a spot in a sacred room with no other occupant in the room cus anyone from the family who worships shapona are not to lift brooms "anyhow".
The sacred broom is placed in a corner in my hometown in Ibarapa,Eruwa ,I can mention the family so anyone can make further enquiry, its still there and it has been there even before I was born ,people still worship it.
Funnily, all house built around had collapsed as they're old but this house that shelters the sacred broom is still standing.
I'm a born again Christian but that doesn't mean I should neglect my cultural heritage.
The family pour Palm oil on this sacred broom day and night,so any offspring from this family of the shapona worshiper that has any trace of Smallpox will go to the broom and scoop some oil from it and rub around the affected region for healing,no matter how worse the smallpox condition might be.
So for that of the broom , I believe that we shouldn't not do a broom " anyhow"
Also, as I'm from the shapona worshiping family, I don't throw a broom into the sun cus as its getting hot and intensive so will my body system be.
Lordsilva: So what's the rightful way to keep the broom after use ?
Mrs Ajongbade:You are supposed to put it in a dark and cool place ,where its not visible to everyone
The broom generally has some dark powers in it ,cus it has been in use for a long time before civilization, its the broom men use to afflict their wife or beloved daughter with "Thunderbolt",when they walk over it ,the deed is done!
