Food For Neighbors battles child hunger in Northern Virginia by raising awareness and community involvement about teen food insecurity. The nonprofit works closely with middle and high school social workers, counselors, and parent liaisons, who identify hungry students for regular, weekend food supplementation and/or grocery gift cards. Celebrating its five-year anniversary this fall, Food For Neighbors has grown from regularly supporting students at Herndon Middle School and Herndon High School to helping children at 24 schools in Fairfax and Loudoun counties. Currently, over 1,500 community members are donating food five times per year, and over 1,000 neighbors are volunteering to collect, sort, package, and/or distribute it.
The need is great, and more and more schools are reaching out to Food For Neighbors for assistance. Visit https://www.foodforneighbors.org/ and join this grassroots movement to end hunger!

21 ABR. 2021 · In this episode we interview Kate Urbank, the DC director of Food Rescue US.
Food Rescue US is a national nonprofit committed to reducing food waste and food insecurity by engaging volunteer "food rescuers" who use their own vehicles to pick up healthy surplus food from donor businesses and deliver it to agencies that feed the food insecure. Food donors, partner agencies and volunteers register in our proprietary software that keeps track of where food is going and who is delivering it. Not only does our program feed hungry people and keep edible food out of landfill, it builds community by connecting these three pillars together for the greater good.
Operating in Northern Virginia and Washington, DC, Food Rescue US - DC welcomes new volunteers who can register through our website and self-select food rescues that work for their schedules. Businesses that are interested in donating and agencies that are looking for food donations should contact Site Director Kate Urbank at kate@foodrescue.us to learn how to join the program.
