Two-time NFL general manager Scot McCloughan joins longtime NFL Draft analyst Rob Rang every week to discuss all things college and professional football.
20 ENE. 2019 · This week on the Instinctive Scouting Podcast, two-time NFL general manager Scot McCloughan joins our own Rob Rang to take a look at the senior all-star game circuit, highlighting some players who have already turned some heads at the East-West Shrine Game as well as taking a look back at prospects who previously caught our eye. As Scot says, we’re showing our age in this episode a bit with references going back to the now defunct Blue-Gray Game and Hula Bowl.
While seniors are the focus in these all-star games, Scot suggests that should change, arguing that “it would be good for everyone” if underclassmen were allowed to participate in these games.
The guys also pick out their favorites among the NFL’s new coaching hires and look ahead to what should be a very entertaining conference championship games this week.
As always, thanks for listening!
9 ENE. 2019 · This week on the Instinctive Scouting Podcast, two-time NFL general manager Scot McCloughan joins our own Rob Rang breaking down Clemson’s stunning 44-16 thrashing of Alabama in the national title game with a special focus, of course, on flashy young quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Tua Tagovailoa. That leads to a further breakdown of the perceived top-rated QBs available in 2019, Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins and Duke’s Daniel Jones, with player comparisons and insight you will not receive elsewhere.
You won’t want to miss Scot and Rob’s choices for NFL MVP, Comeback Player of the Year, Breakout Player of the Year and, of course, the top rookies. The guys’ picks for Coach and Executive of the Year are also likely to spark discussion and disagreement – at least it did for them!
Finally, with the NFL advancing to the divisional round of the playoffs, the guys make their picks, with a strong disagreement on one AFC matchup and an agreement on which team the fellas think may be “marching on” to the conference title game and perhaps Super Bowl glory.
After a couple of weeks off for the holidays to catch up with family, the guys delivered on their most entertaining and insightful ISP episode yet! You don’t want to miss this one!
As always, thanks for listening!
19 DIC. 2018 · This week on the Instinctive Scouting Podcast, two-time NFL general manager Scot McCloughan joins our own Rob Rang breaking down the top offensive linemen in today’s NFL and college football with special attention paid to the University of Oklahoma, whose blockers earned the prestigious Joe Moore Award as the best in the country.
Scot recalls making the “surprising” decision to draft Brandon Scherff in Washington as well as what he learned in working with Trent Williams, Joe Staley in San Francisco and the Hall of Famer Walter Jones in Seattle, among others. Rob shares his “Five F’s” for grading offensive linemen and shares some of his favorite tackles, guards and centers currently throughout the league.
Then, while many NFL fans are gearing up for a playoff run, the guys take a closer look at the Arizona Cardinals, Oakland Raiders, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers and Jacksonville Jaguars - the clubs currently projected to pick in the top 5 in the 2019 NFL draft – and what areas those teams appear to need the most help. If you are a fan of these teams or are already thinking of mock drafts, this is a must-listen segment!

12 DIC. 2018 · This week on the Instinctive Scouting Podcast, two-time NFL general manager Scot McCloughan joins our own Rob Rang to break down the often-discussed (but rarely understood) process that is the NFL’s College Advisory Committee for underclassmen. Scot recalls his days as a general manager and area scout writing reviews of former early entrants into the NFL and gives his advice on who young prospects should be talking to (and who they should not) as they consider one of the most impactful decisions of their young lives.
The underclassmen conversation shifts to the quarterbacks with opinions shared on the top prospects potentially available, like Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins, Oregon’s Justin Herbert and Oklahoma’s newest Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray, who Scot suggests will have plenty of NFL teams as fans should he decide to pursue football rather than focus on baseball as Murray’s agent has suggested he will.
While quarterbacks get most of the buzz, Scot and Rob return to their old-school roots in the final segment this week, focusing on linebackers – a position perhaps even more important in today’s era of RPOs and unique skill-position players than ever before. Scot looks back on helping to draft Bobby Wagner and KJ Wright in Seattle, as well as Patrick Willis in San Francisco. Rob goes way back to the year 2000 with the first college middle linebacker that captured his attention with his playmaking ability and perfect linebacker mentality and Scot shares the name of a linebacker that he tried to trade up for and select for the 49ers but was unable to do so.

5 DIC. 2018 · This week on the Instinctive Scouting Podcast, two-time NFL general manager Scot McCloughan joins our own Rob Rang to review their favorite performances during the college conference championships, as well as peek ahead to the playoff matchups between Oklahoma and Alabama in the Orange Bowl and Notre Dame and Clemson in the Cotton Bowl. The guys also break down the Heisman candidates, breaking them down as NFL prospects as well as giving their own personal opinion as to who will actually win the trophy.
McCloughan puts on his general manager hat for a moment and explains how he would handle the growing issue of college prospects choosing to sit out their final bowl game.
Rob has been bemoaning the lack of star power at the running back position likely to be available in the 2019 NFL draft, so the guys instead take a look at some of the better veteran or even retired runners of recent years. The conversation turns to Washington Redskins star Adrian Peterson, who Scot recalls scouting back at Oklahoma (not to mention, his brother, Dave, playing against him!) and who continues to prove doubters wrong with his Hall of Fame-caliber combination of speed and power.
As always, thanks for listening!
