Learning Horizons - previously ‘The NAME it Podcast’ – started out as a ‘special series’ exploring the re-imagining of education. That series sparked a deeper interest, concern, and passion and became the impetus for making learning horizons (what the future of education and learning might become) the clear focus for this podcast.
For over a decade now I have been asking questions and soaking up knowledge from teachers, educators, specialists, and countless others directly and indirectly involved in education about what is emerging, what could emerge, and what challenges are yet to be addressed.
Increasingly, it appears to me that a re-imagining and eventual transformation of education (in the broadest meaning of the term) is one of the vital areas needing attention if we want to address the many interconnected global challenges. Am I saying it is THE issue everyone should be focusing on? No. It is the one that I have committed myself to because it overlaps with my personal values, experience and background in learning and development, adult learning and facilitation, psychology and human growth, and as a previous board member of an independent school.
There are countless interconnected global issues, challenges and crises facing our world. How are current and future humans being raised, educated, and mentored into becoming the citizens and members of communities to meet these challenges? Are old solutions to past challenges sufficient for today and tomorrow?
Rather than prescribing answers or singular solutions, in each episode of Learning Horizons, with the privilege of my guest’s experiences and perspectives, I hope to learn and explore the emerging questions, challenges, and opportunities for re-imagining education that are dawning on our horizon.

After many years in business as an entrepreneur and investment banker, Tomas Björkman is now a social entrepreneur and the founder of Ekskäret Foundation in Stockholm. He is also the co-founder of the research institute Perspectiva in London, of the Co-creation Loft and the media platform Emerge in Berlin, the 29k.org digital personal development platform and the Inner Development Goals (IDGs) framework. He is a member of the Club of Rome and a fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Science. He is the author of three books: The Market Myth (2016) , The Nordic Secret (together with Lene Rachel Andersen, 2017) and The World We Create (2019). Tomas divides his time between London, Stockholm and Berlin.

He is an internationally recognised educational leader in school transformation processes. He has taught, researched and published in education and transformation for over 20 years, including 17 books and 55 book chapters and journal articles.
His international research and practice focuses on how the 4Cs can be integrated using coherent frameworks to support leaders as they work towards transformation in their contexts. Susan Hrach is an educational researcher and personal coach with expertise in body/mind awareness.
Susan is currently serving as Fulbright Canada Distinguished Research Chair in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario. Since 2012, she has been Director of the Faculty Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning at Columbus State University.
Susan is committed to inclusive education through immersive, sensory experiences of linguistic and cultural diversity. She has been recognized by the University System of Georgia with a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award. As an undergraduate, Susan spent a year studying at the Universität Innsbruck, Austria, which shaped her lifelong interests in world literature, translation studies, and global education.

Guest Bio:
Michael Strong is the founder of The Socratic Experience, a virtual school for children ages 8 - 19. He is one of the most experienced designers of innovative school programs in the United States. His projects include a public school program in which minority female students gained four years’ worth of critical thinking gains in four months (on the Watson-Glaser). He later went into Montessori secondary school program design at The Judson Montessori School (San Antonio), The Emerson School, and Hacienda School. He created The Winston Academy, where middle school students passed AP exams, making it the most academically advanced school in the country at the time.
Another of Michael’s projects, Moreno Valley High School, a Paideia charter high school, was ranked the 36th-best U.S. public high school by Newsweek. More recently he co-founded KoSchool in Austin, Texas, which combined his high-performance approach to AP coursework and SAT score gains with a focus on entrepreneurial and creative projects. KoSchool, in turn, became the original model for The Academy of Thought and Industry, the high school model for the largest Montessori network in the United States.
Students from Michael’s schools have been admitted to Harvard, Stanford, Georgetown, Smith, Bard, Bennington, McGill, UT-Austin, University of Colorado, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Parsons School of Design, Quest, St. John’s and many dozens of other post-secondary institutions.
