He learns that his connection to Scadrial pulls on him, allowing him to use it as a compass in his search for the Ire. Using that 'compass' allows him to find the strange gathering of people who live in the lad of the dead (kinda, we'll explain as best we can). These are a VERY heavy couple of Cosmere mechanics chapters involving various Shards from multiple worlds, and people from those various places using different sorts of magics and investitures.
