31 DIC. 2021 · In this episode, hosts Ida-Maria Helander and Natalia Vaskova speak to Gunn-Britt Retter, Head of Arctic and Environment Unit of the Saami Council, Christina Henriksen, President of the Saami Council, and Åsa Larsson Blind, Vice-President of the Saami Council about the work, structure and role of the Saami Council. The Saami Council is one of six Permanent Participants of the Arctic Council and has had a long standing role in advocating for Saami issues in international foria in and beyond the Arctic.

25 DIC. 2021 · In this second episode of Our Arctic Presence, we journey back to the early winter of 2019 when youth from throughout the circumpolar north gathered in Roavvenjárga ( Rovaniemi, Finland) for the first Arctic Youth Leaders Summit. With four attendees, On The Land hosts its first roundtable discussion on what the future of the Arctic looks like to us, climate change, adaptation, and how to collaborate across international Arctic borders.

“Dear Relatives and Invited Guests,
Yesterday was an historical day, since we, the Arctic Indigenous Youth Leaders, had our first
official gathering.
During our meeting, we have come to an understanding that though we are separated by
language, cultures, and by borders, we are all facing the same issues. All our traditional areas
have been colonized by the Arctic States and with that, our identities, knowledge, language
and health have been put to the test. It is important to recognize that these issues are not
separated, but are interconnected. The neglection of one issue is the neglection of all these
issues. We would therefore like to present the following statements to ensure our prosperity
in the present and future.”

In this first episode hosts Enni Similä and Deenaalee Hodgdon sit down with special guest Rosa-Máren Magga of the Indigenous Peoples’ Secretariat to discuss the inception of the Arctic Council. Through one on one and roundtable interviews with the Indigenous Leaders that were present in those early years, we weave together the tapestry of how this intergovernmental forum became the only stage in the world to include Indigenous Peoples at the table and make decisions through consensus.
