8 SEP. 2026 · Summary
After 32 years of marriage, Steven Rubenstein came out at 55 with no idea what his future would hold. He feared he was too old to find love, carried tremendous guilt over the pain his decision caused his family, and described the future ahead of him as simply “blank.” What followed surprised him: new friendships, solo adventures, a sense of belonging he had never experienced before—and the realization that coming out had given him what felt like a second chance at life.
Then Steven met acclaimed choreographer and artist David Rousseve. In this episode of Out Late With David, Steven shares the difficult transition from marriage to an authentic gay life before David joins the conversation to tell the wonderfully unlikely story of how they met and fell in love.
Together, Steven and David reflect on relationships, race, aging, authenticity, loss and the courage required to change direction when the life you’re living no longer fits. David also discusses how his own journey, including the loss of his former husband, influenced his deeply personal solo work BECOMING DADDY AF.
Their story is a reminder that stepping into the unknown can be terrifying—but the life waiting on the other side may be bigger, richer and filled with more love than you ever imagined.
Takeaways
1. The future we fear is often not the future that awaits us.
Steven went into coming out imagining loneliness. He couldn’t picture a partner and thought that, at 55, he was already past his “shelf life.” Instead, he discovered community, desire, travel, independence, belonging and eventually David. Importantly, the interview doesn’t minimize what his decision cost his former wife and family. Both realities exist at once.
2. Authenticity can require disrupting a life that isn’t obviously broken.
One of the most interesting aspects of Steven’s story is that he doesn’t rewrite his marriage as miserable. He says it was a good marriage and acknowledges the very real pain his coming out caused. David describes a parallel experience decades earlier: abandoning an expected professional path, ending an engagement to a woman and confronting his sexuality. Both men ultimately chose authenticity without pretending those choices were painless.
3. Reinvention doesn’t end with coming out.
The second half broadens the episode beyond Steven’s coming-out story. Steven and David found one another after each had already lived a substantial adult life and experienced long-term relationships. David’s DADDY AF takes that idea further: aging itself becomes another invitation to ask what life means, what remains unfinished, and how love, loss, race, ancestry and mortality shape the person we are still becoming.
Sound Bites
1. Steven — the episode-defining quote
“I felt like I was getting a second chance at life, like it was a game of pinball and I got an extra ball.”
2. Steven — on fearing he had waited too long
“At 55, I was persuaded that I was an expired carton of milk, way past my shelf life.”
3. Steven — on what actually happened
“I thought my life would end when I came out. My life began.”
4. David — on choosing a different life
“There are junctures in life where you have to examine everything and be bold enough to make different choices.”
5. Steven — advice to someone afraid to come out
“Trust that process…and that it’s never too late.”
6. David — on listening to yourself
“If I can quiet my mind and follow what my heart says to do, it has never led me wrong.”
7. David — on what ultimately matters
“Love is actually the core of what we’re living for.”
8. Steven — the emotional wedding moment
“My mom said to me…‘Now I have two sons.’”

28 JUL. 2026 · After spending more than three decades trying to suppress his sexuality, David Anderson reached a point where he could no longer ignore who he truly was. Raised in a conservative Southern Baptist environment, he prayed for years that being gay would simply disappear while building what appeared to be the perfect life—a 35-year marriage, four children, ministry, and a successful career.
In this deeply honest conversation, David shares the emotional cost of living behind a mask, the difficult decision to come out at 57, navigating a collaborative divorce, rebuilding relationships with his children, and discovering unexpected joy after embracing his authentic self. He also reflects on faith, family, finding love with his husband Peter, and why authenticity transformed every area of his life.
This episode is a powerful reminder that while coming out later in life is never easy, it’s never too late to live honestly—and to find happiness you never thought possible.
Takeaways
1. Authenticity is worth the risk. After decades of trying to suppress who he was through faith, counseling, and sheer determination, David discovered that the freedom of living authentically transformed every area of his life—not just his relationships, but his confidence, career, and sense of self.
2. Coming out later in life affects the whole family—but healing is possible. David speaks candidly about navigating a collaborative divorce, supporting his former wife through the transition, rebuilding relationships with his children, and recognizing that everyone’s journey toward acceptance unfolds on its own timeline.
3. Fear is often bigger than reality. For years, David believed coming out would destroy everything he loved. While the journey wasn’t easy, he ultimately found deeper relationships, unexpected support, and a level of joy he never imagined possible. As he reflects, “All the fears… were not nearly as big as you thought.”
Sound Bites
“I prayed harder to not be gay than I’ve ever prayed for anything else.”
“I spent years making myself smaller and smaller… until I became just a shadow of me.”
“The biggest thing I gained after coming out? Me.”
“All the fears were real—but they were never as big as I thought.”
“I thought I was committed to marriage. Today, I’m committed to Peter.”
“Everything got better. Everything."
“What people loved was the person I was pretending to be.” “I didn’t choose to be gay. I chose to be myself.” “I couldn’t keep that box on the shelf anymore.”
“I almost feel guilty about how happy I am.” “You’re okay. You don’t have to apologize for who you are.”

24 JUN. 2026 · In this episode of Out Late With David, David sits down with author Peter Leahy to discuss his remarkable journey of coming out at age 44 after 20 years of marriage, raising two children, and living a life that looked successful on the outside but felt deeply unfulfilled within.
Peter shares how years of self-loathing, fear, and hiding his true identity gave way to courage, community, and ultimately authentic happiness. From finding support through Gay Fathers of Atlanta, navigating family relationships, and building a new life, to meeting his husband and relocating to Palm Springs, Peter reflects on the risks and rewards of embracing his true self.
He also shares the powerful letter he wrote to his former closeted self—a moving reminder that sometimes the bravest decision is simply taking the first step toward the life you deserve.
This conversation is about far more than sexuality; it’s about hope, reinvention, self-acceptance, and the truth that it’s never too late to become the person you were meant to be.
Guest: Peter Leahy, author of Glowing Up Gay.
Sound Bites
- “Peter, you took a chance and it worked. And I’m really proud that you did it. More than that, I’m grateful that you made our life a lot better.”
- “I was lying every single day—to other people, to people I loved, and most importantly, to myself.”
- “When I was in the closet, I wasn’t necessarily unhappy. But compared to the way I live now, I was a mile away from happiness.”
- “When you’re in the closet that long, you think you’re different. You think you’re damaged goods.”
- Peter to himself: “I love who you are now. I think you’ll love yourself even more when you come out.”

9 ENE. 2026 · In this powerful and heartfelt conversation, LGBTQ+ civil rights advocate and global lecturer Greg R. Baird sits down with David in Palm Springs to share his journey from growing up closeted in a small Michigan town to becoming a respected educator, storyteller, and champion for allyship. Greg opens up about coming out at 31, navigating painful family rejection, and the moments that shaped his calling—including a life-changing encounter with a student who credits his story with saving her life. Together, David and Greg explore the transformative power of storytelling, finding community after coming out, and learning to live with courage, connection, and authenticity at any age. This episode offers wisdom, warmth, and hope for anyone on their journey of self-acceptance and belonging.
Takeaways & Sound Bites
- Growing up in a small, religious town made coming out feel impossible, but college provided Greg the first space where he could blossom and explore who he truly was.
- Early advocacy began unintentionally, as Greg and his first boyfriend spoke to college classes about being gay—long before he saw himself as an activist.
- Family responses to coming out were painful and complicated, but over time, Greg found peace through patience, education, and accepting what could not be changed.
- Parents’ understanding is shaped by what they know, and sometimes by those influencing them; change, when it comes, can be slow and surprising.
- You can’t change your parents—only yourself. Greg emphasizes honoring your truth, your energy, and your value, regardless of others’ acceptance.
- Storytelling is a transformative tool that can change hearts, minds, and even policy by revealing the humanity behind the issues.
- A life-changing moment with a suicidal student affirmed Greg’s calling to become a global lecturer—proof that sharing your story can save lives.
- Coming out may not happen overnight, and each person must move at their own pace and readiness. There is no “right” timeline.
- Finding community after coming out takes intention, whether through shared activities, meetups, support groups, hobbies, or interest-based circles.
- Real connection requires stepping beyond apps and screens, leaning into face-to-face interactions that build genuine friendships.
- Introverts, extroverts, and everyone in between can find their place—community can look like wine groups, sports leagues, sober spaces, Disney meetups, or coffee chats.
- Self-acceptance is foundational; be patient with yourself and trust that your personality, confidence, and comfort in community will grow over time.
- We need connection now more than ever, especially in a challenging social climate—putting yourself out there, even gently, opens emotional doors you never expected.
- Letting people in, rather than “coming out,” can be a more compassionate and empowering way to frame revealing your authentic self.
- You are not alone, and hearing stories like Greg’s or those on Out Late With David can provide life-saving hope, community, and belonging.
