In addition to the usual procedures, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon can be consulted on such matters as contouring the gums, fitting prostheses, repairing root canals or extracting teeth.

Oral surgeons often get patients by referral from a dentist or orthodontist and perform dentures and fittings.

If oral or maxillofacial surgery is indicated, the surgeon will order a series of tests to design an operation plan.
