6 OCT. 2026 · In this episode of Beyond the Torch, hosts Leslie Nease and Todd Herzog (both from Survivor: China) interview Ashley Trainer from Survivor: Samoa (Season 19). Ashley shares how she was originally an alternate who impressed producers so much they expanded the cast to 20 players just to include her, and recounts her experience on the show from her gut instinct about Russell Hantz and Ben Browning, to the infamous sea slug smoothie eating challenge, to a harrowing spider-in-the-ear incident at night. The conversation covers the harsh realities of camp life (no food, no water, bug bites that left permanent scars), her post-show trip to Fiji at Ponderosa, the difficulty of staying in touch with winner Natalie White, how the show boosted her confidence at age 22, her current life as a Starbucks recruiter and mom in Minnesota, and the incredible stories behind each of them getting their Survivor torches back. They also discuss recent seasons, the controversial fire-making challenge at final four, and announce an upcoming Survivor watch party in Utah.
