13 OCT. 2026 · Toy Story 5 takes on kids' screen time, technology, and imaginative play. But what happens when a screen isn't just entertainment, but something a child with disabilities genuinely needs? In Episode 43 of Resurface Podcast, Rachel and Stephen react to Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 5 and its surprisingly complicated message about children, tablets, friendship, and growing up. As parents of three children, including a five-year-old daughter with significant disabilities, we have a different perspective on the screen-time debate. We talk about the struggle to balance imaginative play with technology, the changes we've noticed in our own children when screens are limited, and the reality of relying on devices more than we'd like. For our daughter Mila, screen time has sometimes been a necessity during overwhelming seasons of caregiving. We've also watched technology help her learn, develop skills, and participate in activities that might otherwise be inaccessible. That brings us to a side of the screen-time conversation that often gets overlooked: disability, accessibility, and inclusion. What does it mean when a tablet makes it possible for a child to sit through a doctor's appointment, visit a restaurant, or participate in the community? And what happens when the world expects children with invisible disabilities to adapt to environments that aren't designed for them? We don't have all the answers. We're trying to find a better balance ourselves. We also share a personal story about children trying to understand Mila's differences, discuss our family's rules about electronics, and consider whether Toy Story 5 got the balance between screens and real-world play right. **What did you think of Toy Story 5? And how do you handle screen time in your family? We'd love to hear your perspective in the comments.** Note: This discussion contains Toy Story 5 spoilers.

1 OCT. 2026 · How does a real mom measure up against the internet’s parenting standards?
Rachel is finding out the hard way. In Episode 42 of Resurface, Rachel turns online parenting advice into an Internet Mom Report Card and grades herself on everything the internet says a good mom is apparently supposed to do: perfect morning routines, creative lunches, developmental activities, enrichment, screen-time limits, gentle parenting, an organized home, quality family time, Pinterest-worthy memories, and more. Somehow this involves Fortnite raising a child, questionable lunch expectations, toy rotation, bribery, yelling, screen-time loopholes, secretly burying children's artwork in the trash, and the increasingly important question: where exactly are parents supposed to find the time to do all of this?
This isn't a parenting-advice episode. It's a parenting comedy about what happens when you stack every supposedly reasonable parenting standard on top of every other supposedly reasonable parenting standard and expect one actual human mother to meet all of them.
Rachel does surprisingly well in a few categories. She fails spectacularly in others.
Then everything gets added up for the final Internet Mom Report Card. Will the children be allowed to keep their current mother?
Probably best to let the internet decide.

23 SEP. 2026 · Rachel lived with severe OCD during pregnancy, after childbirth, after pregnancy loss, and for years without knowing what it was.
In Episode 41, Rachel shares her experience with postpartum and perinatal OCD, intrusive thoughts, contamination OCD, and the fear of telling anyone what was happening inside her head. Stephen knew about these thoughts at the time, but after having a stroke at 37, he no longer remembers parts of that period — so some of what Rachel tells him now feels almost new.
Rachel traces her OCD from childhood intrusive thoughts to contamination fears during pregnancy with Ariana, then to darker intrusive thoughts after becoming a mother. She explains why she once believed the devil was attacking her, what happened when she finally told Stephen, and how the OCD returned severely after miscarriage and pregnancy loss.
The conversation also addresses why people with perinatal OCD may be afraid to tell a doctor or psychiatrist, including fears about being judged or having a child taken away.
Later, Rachel and Stephen discuss harm OCD, unwanted sexual intrusive thoughts, and pedophilia-themed OCD. Some of the themes discussed were part of Rachel's experience and some were not.
Stephen uses a hit-and-run OCD example to explain the cycle of checking, Googling, replaying events, monitoring reactions, and seeking reassurance — and why OCD's demand for certainty is never fully satisfied.
They also discuss postpartum OCD versus postpartum psychosis, why a podcast cannot diagnose what someone's thoughts mean, and OCD recovery. Rachel says her OCD today is in 99.9% remission.
This episode grew out of the larger maternal and postpartum mental health conversation surrounding the Lindsay Clancy case, but it is not an analysis of her case. We do not diagnose Lindsay Clancy or discuss her criminal responsibility.
This episode contains discussion of harm and sexual intrusive-thought themes and is intended for adults.

17 SEP. 2026 · Episode 40: Medicaid Waiver Fight, Invisible Disability, and a Labor Day Break at Carowinds
Rachel and Stephen return for episode 40 after a Labor Day weekend break, clarifying they are not homeless but still facing mortgage and housing instability tied to their ongoing fight for Medicaid services for their daughter Mila, who was born pulseless for 25 minutes and has an invisible disability. They describe support from a senator’s office, updates on the CAP/C Medicaid waiver legal battle (including losing Disability Rights NC counsel, proceeding pro se against the AG’s office, a Chapter 41B dismissal, and a stalled Superior Court appeal due to a sealed thumb-drive record), and a civil rights complaint alleging discrimination by North Carolina Medicaid that has recently gone quiet. They share personal updates: friends visiting, a trip to Carowinds with rollercoasters, a payment mishap, kids returning to school, the family dog’s decline, and Mila’s cochlear implant being turned down at UNC to improve tolerance after years of misdiagnosis.

2 SEP. 2026 · Would you save your spouse or the dog if your house were on fire?
In Episode 39, Rachel and Stephen play “Wives or Husbands,” a game built around marriage hypothetical questions and which spouse is more likely to do what.
It begins with familiar arguments about driving, directions, man flu, mental load, selective hearing, and passive-aggressive sighing. Then the questions become considerably less reasonable. The dog, hamster, baby books, and children all make Rachel’s fire-rescue list. When she asks whether Stephen would save her, a normal relationship question becomes a serious discussion about a charred wife, skin grafts, and whether Rachel was already beyond saving.
They also uncover a five-year family secret. Rachel ran out of gas after insisting that zero miles did not mean empty, called AAA instead of Stephen, and recruited the children to make sure he never discovered she had been wrong.
This is married couple comedy about wives vs. husbands, relationship questions, mental load, driving arguments, marital logic, and what happens when two people who know each other far too well are given hypothetical situations.

20 AGO. 2026 · What happens when a married couple compares their favorite foods, desserts, TV shows and restaurants, then realizes how much of life they have been putting off while waiting for the “right” time?In Episode 37 of the Resurface Podcast, Rachel and Stephen start with the important questions: Is crinkle-cut fry slander justified? Could Rachel actually win a food-eating contest? How many completely wrong TV shows can she guess before landing on *Saved by the Bell*? And which restaurants and desserts actually make the favorites list? We roast each other with sarcasm and deadpan humor, and guess completely wrong 95% of the time. Then the conversation gets more serious. WE talk about the things we keep postponing, from taking a real family vacation to simply having more time with our kids. Rachel opens up about the invisible workload behind special needs parenting, caregiving, Medicaid, legal battles, and CAP/C advocacy, plus the reality of raising a child who cannot reliably self-report if something happens. She also talks candidly about screen-time guilt, Fortnite, and realizing that the demands on her time have changed the kind of hands-on parenting she wants to be doing with our special needs daughter. This episode is equal parts sarcastic married-couple humor and an honest look at parenting, caregiving, family priorities and what gets pushed aside when there is always something more urgent to handle.

13 AGO. 2026 · A stranger claiming to be a 17-year-old messaged our child on Fortnite, then asked where they lived, their school, and their phone number. This week we're breaking format: a lighter Amazon reviews cold open, then a hard conversation about online predators on gaming platforms. We walk through exactly what happened when our child was contacted by an adult posing as a teenager, the red flags we missed, and the three reports we filed: local law enforcement, NCMEC's CyberTipline, and Epic Games. We also cover the parental control gap in tools like Bark Home, how to set up Epic Games parental controls step by step, and why this can happen on any device with in-game chat, not just Fortnite.
