5 JUN. 2025 · Starting this month, I’ll be sharing weekly posts called “Enchilada”—a fun section packed with juicy bits of Spanish, perfect for beginners.
Each post will include mini-lessons and real-life stories from Spanish learners like you.
To kick things off, let’s talk about something a student asked me this week: the phrase “¿Qué tal?”
You’ve probably heard it before and may have been told it’s a casual way to say “how are you?”—just like “¿Cómo estás?”
Well, this student used “¿Qué tal?” with her Mexican colleague in San Diego, and he suggested she say “buenos días” instead. 😯
Why the correction? 🤔
In some Latin American countries, “¿Qué tal?” can feel a bit informal—especially in workplace settings or when speaking to someone you don’t know well.
Latin American cultures often place more value on respect and hierarchy, especially in professional environments.
So a more formal greeting like “buenos días” made more sense 👍
So here's the takeaway ⬇️
✅ “¿Qué tal?” is totally fine—but it sits somewhere between casual and formal.
✅ If it’s your first time talking to someone—or if it’s a work-related conversation—it’s usually better to start with “buenos días,” “buenas tardes,” or “¿Cómo está?” (notice the formal “está” instead of “estás”).
✅ As the relationship becomes more familiar, you can ease into more casual greetings like “¿Qué tal?” or “¿Cómo estás?”

Summary:
Question about your origin ⬇️
¿De dónde eres? = Where are you from?
To answer, use "soy de" + your contry. Example: Soy de Estados Unidos.
Questions about the reason of your visit ⬇️
¿Qué haces por acá? = What are you doing around here?
¿Vienes de visita? = Are you visiting?
