Story 1
In Stone River, a seemingly typical American town with familiar seasonal events like carnivals and Christmas parades, a dark secret sets it apart: strict rules govern residents' lives to protect them from monstrous, bipedal wolf-like creatures that inhabit the surrounding woods and prey on humans. These rules, such as never traveling alone or leaving windows open at night, stem from centuries-old local lore about these creatures, which have claimed numerous lives, including newcomers like E.G. Parker and his crew in the 1940s, and local teens Alan and Lisa in the 1970s, whose gruesome deaths haunt the town. A 63-year-old lifelong resident, recounts the town’s history and the rules’ origins, which predate his grandmother’s tales of a time without them. His own harrowing encounter with one of these creatures, when his truck runs out of gas on a lonely road, nearly costs him his life.
Story 2
In the summer of 1972, a 14-year-old boy fishing at a lagoon beneath the dilapidated "Monkey Bridge" near the Charles River discovers an old, ornate watch entangled in weeds, which he cleans and cherishes, unaware of its sinister history. That night, a terrifying dream places him on the bridge, reliving the fatal fall of a boy his age, and he awakens to see the boy’s ghost pleading for help, with the watch mysteriously stopping at 4:18. The next day, compelled to climb the bridge, he encounters the ghostly boy again, tormented by demonic gremlins who mock him into a deadly crossing, revealing the watch’s curse: it lures young boys to their deaths, manipulated by these malevolent entities. With his grandfather’s help, a war veteran familiar with such evil, they uncover the watch’s connection to Timothy Burns, a boy who drowned decades ago, and destroy it at his grave, banishing the gremlins and freeing the trapped souls. Now an old man and veteran himself, the narrator reflects on the ongoing battle against such soul-stealing evil, which persists in modern times through technology, as he vigilantly protects his grandson from similar unseen dangers.

Michael Farris Smith and Shane Brown write what they know. Both could be described as writers of Southern Noir.
Smith has had a successful career writing novels, screenplays, and short stories. He is also a musician and leads the local Oxford band, Michael Farris Smith and the Smokes. Their latest release is called Lostville. You can see the film, Chasing Rabbits, on Tubi, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV.
Shane Brown is the son of acclaimed author Larry Brown. He is following in his father's footsteps in writing in a similar voice. He has recently landed a publishing deal and his first book will be out soon. Both authors are located in Oxford, a gathering point for creative types. Must be something in the air.
Southern noir is a gritty, atmospheric subgenre of fiction that merges the dark, cynical tone of classic noir with the distinct cultural and historical backdrop of the American South. Set in humid, decaying towns or sprawling urban underbellies, it features flawed protagonists—often detectives, drifters, or outcasts—navigating a world of corruption, violence, and moral ambiguity. Infused with Southern Gothic elements, such as grotesque characters and oppressive settings, Southern noir explores themes of racial tension, class struggle, and the lingering weight of history, all wrapped in a sultry, fatalistic vibe. Authors like James Lee Burke and Daniel Woodrell craft taut, evocative tales that pulse with the South’s unique blend of beauty and brutality.

6 AGO. 2024 · Welcome to the Spreaker Supports Club for the What if its True Podcast. I will do exclusive podcasts for you, and only you, as much as I am able. I'd like to use this exclusive content to share with you stories that I like. That may sound selfish, but I need an creative outlet to do projects that are not related to monsters, Bigfoot, etc..
When I am away from my podcast, I do not read or follow anything, ANYTHING, related to Bigfoot or other monsters. I do enjoy the stories because they are exciting, but I have zero interest in the topic. I have made these statements through the life of this podcast and maybe you've heard me say this, but if you haven't, I don't want you to be disappointed because I can not help the way my mind works. Monsters are interesting, but I only enjoy the stories. This will give me a good experience to share with you writings that I enjoy and I hoppe you enjoy it as well.
I will keep you up to date on what I am working on, things I do not say on the public podcasts. Namely because you were good enough to hand over $4.99 a month for something just for you, and that is what I will give you in exchange for your support. I can't make promises on how often these will be uploaded. I am shooting for four or five exclusive shows each month so that it works out to you paying about a dollar per podcast. Thats not a good deal since there are so many free podcasts to listen to, but it will be the best I can do....and I hope this is enough.
