(Mental Health Month) Tai Tupou- iamhope.org.nz
Rugby player Tai Tupou was preparing for the chance to become a NZ Warrior, chasing his dreams to represent Auckland in the NRL, when his plans were put on hold during the selection processes. Injuring his ankle threw and spanner in the works and Tai suffered a huge blow to his mental health. The subsequent depression as a result of this life change eventually lead Tai down the path of education for Kiwi youth to spread a positive message about mental health management.
Ten years on, Tai now works with I Am Hope traveling around the country to educate Kiwis and reduce the stigma around discussing mental health – particularly within the sport industry and among men. Sharing his story to inspire others, Tai took his learnings to help the next generation, encouraging kids to see through the tough times – because there’s always light at the end of the tunnel.
With three kids of his own, Tai is driven by the need to uplift kids and let them know that you can overcome all of life’s challenges.
