Ricordo benissimo la prima volta che incontrai Roberta: era seduta sui gradini del teatro, io ho appena finito di recitare, recitavo in una filodrammatica italo australiana, e lei era appena arrivata a Melbourne in visita, allora non sapeva ancora che anche lei ci avrebbe abitato per un po'. Io, ripeto, recitavo in una filodrammatica mentre Roberta era già un'attrice teatrale molto brava, molto conosciuta, veniva dalla scuola di Strehler. Niente, mi colpì tantissimo non solo per questo bellissimo tailleur pantaloni che aveva penso che fosse Giorgio Armani ma per la sua voce strepitosa la voce più più notturna, calda, sexy che avessi mai sentito. E lì fuma insieme una sigaretta. Io, che all'epoca fumavo ancora, ma avevo appena finito di recitare in questa compagnia amatoriale e lei una grande attrice già affermata, e lì ci incontrammo, diventammo amiche e non ci lasciamo più. Roberta è una persona fantastica, una di quelle persone così dolci che, niente, è una persona bella dentro una persona bella fuori. Abbiamo fatto un sacco di cose insieme, per un periodo abbiamo anche abitato insieme con le nostre piccole famigliuole, i nostri piccoli nuclei familiari, e ci siamo sempre incontrate e sempre tenute in contatto nonostante i chilometri, nonostante le distanze, nonostante le cose che succedono nella vita, e lei mi ha sempre ospitato nella sua minuscola, prima nella minuscola casetta, nel minuscolo appartamento di Monteverde, sopra i tetti di Roma, e poi nella grande casa con diversi piani a Vercelli, la casa teatro. Con Roberta ho sempre questa sensazione, fin dall'inizio l'ho avuta, che è come quando prendi mano dal tavolo una scatola di fiammiferi e la scuoti per vedere se ci sono dei fiammiferi dentro, lo facciamo tutti in modo automatico, senza che ce ne sia un motivo, senza che abbiamo veramente bisogno di accendere un fiammifero, però quando scuotiamo la scatolina e dentro ci sono veramente i fiammiferi quel rumore che fa quel tintinnio dei legnetti contro le pareti di cartone dà un senso di appagamento e di soddisfazione. Ecco questo è il senso che mi ha sempre dato Roberta e starle vicino. Mi dispiace tantissimo di non poter vedere il suo spettacolo dove lei parla di me, ma so che presto riuscirò a vederlo Roberta spero che presto riusciremo anche ad abbracciarsi di nuovo intanto voglio mandarti questo come mio personalissimo regalo di compleanno poi ci sentiremo al telefono più tardi, però è tanto volevo mandarti questo e dirti che ti voglio bene e che sono contenta che tu sia ancora e sia rimasta e che spero rimarrai ancora per molto dentro la mia vita. I remember very well the first time I met Roberta: she was sitting on the steps of the theater, I have just finished acting, I was acting in an Italian-Australian amateur drama, and she had just arrived in Melbourne to visit, she did not know at the time that she too would have gone to live there for a while. As I said, I was acting in an amateur theatre company while Roberta was already an accomplished actress, very well known, she came from the Strehler’s school. Well, she struck me not only for this beautiful trouser suit she was wearing (I think it was Giorgio Armani) but for her amazing voice: the most nocturnal, hot, sexy voice I had ever heard. And there we smoked a cigarette together, I was still smoking back then, I had just finished acting in this amateur company and she is a great actress already established, and there we met, we became friends and we have never left each other since. Roberta is a fantastic person, one of those people so sweet that, nothing, she is a beautiful person inside and outside. We have done lots of things together, for a while we also lived together with our little families, our small families, and we always met and always kept in touch despite the kilometers, despite the distances, despite the things that happen in life, and she has always welcomed me in her tiny house, first in the tiny house, the tiny apartment in Monteverde, above the rooftops of Rome, and then in the large house with several floors in Vercelli, the theater house. With Roberta I always have this feeling, from the beginning I have had it, it is like when you take a box of matches from the table and shake it to see if there are any matches inside, we all do it automatically, without having a reason for it, without really needing to light a match, but when we shake the box and there are actually matches inside, that noise, the tinkling of sticks against the cardboard walls gives a sense of satisfaction and gratification. This is the feeling that Roberta has always given me, being close to her. I am very sorry not to be able to see her show where she talks about me, but I know that soon I will be able to see it Roberta, I hope that soon we will also be able to hug each other again, in the meantime I want to send you this as my very personal birthday present. We will talk on the phone later, but I really wanted to send you this and tell you that I love you and that I am happy that you are still and remained and that I hope you will remain in my life for a long time.
