Ho tradotto unconference con sconferenza (avrei potuto usare non-conferenza ma volevo qualcosa di originale). Cosa è una sconferenza? È un evento ideato per essere completamente interattivo e partecipativo, dove non c'è distinzione tra chi presenta e chi ascolta. L'altro giorno mi sono affacciata in una sala dove si stava tenendo una conferenza. Cercavo qualcuno, ho aperto la porta, ho guardato dentro e ho visto quello che mi aspettavo: delle persone su un palco che chiacchieravano tra loro e facevano vedere dei power point e il pubblico, il vasto pubblico che alcuni seguivano, altri sonnecchiavano, la maggior parte di loro stava guardando e il proprio cellulare.

Ora, quando una persona decide di andare a una conferenza è potenzialmente interessata all'argomento, altrimenti ci sono tantissime altre cose che potrebbe fare, prima di tutto starsene a casa. Quindi, se già decide di uscire di casa e andare fisicamente alla conferenza, potenzialmente ha un po' di interesse.

Poi però questo interesse doveva finire, perché la gente si distrae? Secondo me non è tanto colpa degli oratori, anche se c'è gente che veramente farebbe addormentare chiunque, però è proprio il formato della conferenza che induce questo tipo di addormentamento della platea, perché poche persone sul palco, tante persone che devono seguire passivamente.

E così mi è tornato in mente un modello di di conferenza a cui non avevo pensato da tanto tempo e che però esiste da decenni ormai, e cioè la unconference. Non so se qua in Italia sia molto diffusa, non ho nemmeno cercato su internet quindi ve la traduco così al volo è la 'sconferenza' e in che cosa si contraddistingue? Che non c'è una divisione tra pubblico e persone che presentano, i presentatori quindi non c'è nemmeno una preselezione degli argomenti e si fa tutto insieme, è diciamo un grande lavoro di gruppo in uno spazio aperto dove l'unica cosa che bisogna sapere è dove si vuole arrivare o quali sono le cose che si vogliono portare a casa in termini di contenuti.

E poi si decide tutto insieme. Si prediligono gli spazi aperti, si prediligono le sessioni di gruppo. Ci sono poi tutto, c'è una casistica, diversi nomi fishbowl, una persona in mezzo agli altri, attorno gli open bar, insomma c'è tutta una anche terminologia per aiutare a organizzare queste conferenze.
La cosa fondamentale è che sono degli incontri informali, dove non c'è una persona sul pulpito che predica e gli altri passivamente che ascoltano ma dove si contribuisce tutti insieme. Naturalmente alla base di questo c'è il fatto che bisogna avere il coraggio di abbandonare il potere e quindi bisogna avere fiducia nella propria comunità di riferimento e veramente credere che si possa arrivare a fare qualcosa insieme perché nelle sconferenze non è tanto importante il punto d'arrivo la destinazione, quanto piuttosto il percorso che si fa insieme.

E naturalmente non tutti gli argomenti si prestano a questo tipo di approccio. Però perché non provare qualche volta a fare delle conferenze, ma non noiose?

Now, when a person decides to go to a conference is potentially interested in the topic, otherwise there are so many other things they could be doing, first of all staying home. So if they already decide to leave home and physically go to the conference, they potentially have some interest.
But then where does this interest end up, why do people get distracted? In my opinion, it's not so much the speakers' fault, although there are people who really would put anyone to sleep, however, it's the format of the conference that induces this kind of falling asleep in the audience, because so few people on stage, so many people who have to passively follow along.

And so I was reminded of a model of conferencing that I hadn't thought about for a long time and yet has existed for decades now, and that is the unconference. I don't know if it's widespread here in Italy, I haven't even looked it up on the internet so I'll translate it for you so on the fly it's the 'sconferenza' and what is so special about it? That there is no division between audience and presenters, so there is not even a pre-selection of topics and you do everything together, it's let's say a big group work in an open space where the only thing you need to know is where you want to get to or what are the things you want to bring home in terms of content.

And then everything is decided together. Open spaces are preferred, group sessions are preferred. There are entire, there is a case system, different names: fishbowl, one person surrounded by others, open bars etc. in short there is a whole terminology to help organize these conferences.
The key thing is that they are informal meetings, where there is not one person in the pulpit preaching and others passively listening but where you all contribute together. Of course underlying this is the fact that you have to have the courage to relinquish power and then you have to trust your community of reference and really believe that you can get to do something together because in the unconference, it is not so much the end point, the destination that is important, but rather the path you take together.

And of course not all topics lend themselves to this kind of approach. However, why not try sometimes to give lectures, but not boring ones?
