Having a sense of coherence (SOC) is an aspect of self that is recognized as a global construct expressing the degree to which a person has a pervasive and dynamic, but lasting, feeling that the internal and external stimuli and stressors in his/her environment are (a) comprehensible, i.e., predictable, structured, and explicable, (b) manageable, i.e., there are resources available to meet the demands of these stimuli, and (c) meaningful, i.e., the demands are challenges worthy of engagement and coping.
It has been proposed that a strong SOC would help to mediate and ameliorate stresses by influencing coping efforts. This concept is the basis of the “salutogenetic model,” i.e., explaining how people cope with stressors such as illness and how people remain in reasonably good physical and emotional health despite the stressors and environmental “insults.”
To explore this dimension and to explain a person's position or change on a health-disease continuum, health sociologist Aaron Antonovsky developed a 29-question self-rating scale that has been widely employed in research. Primary research dealt with the feasibility, reliability, and validity of the SOC scale in a variety of countries and settings, and then employed it as a measure of both independent and dependent (outcome) variables. (Giora Kaplan, in Encyclopedia of Social Measurement, 2005)
Although the SOC scale was first developed some 25 years ago, it is in wide use in a broad range of health research. A PubMed search for literature since 2000 turned up over 140 publications using this concept/instrument. These research efforts include studies on (1) general health, quality of life, and subjective well-being, (2) adjustment to natural life changes such as menopause and old age, (3) coping/adjustment to illness such as chronic heart failure, stem-cell transplantation, and orthopedic injury, (4) coping with trauma such as posttraumatic stress disorder, (5) dealing with illness of a family member and/or the stress of caretaking, and (6) assessing intervention programs.
Having a sense of coherence in relationship with others can also be characteristic of the quality of correspondence one has with his/her/their environment and situations we are all dealing with.
The idea of being a bit more consciously attuned and (I) aware of the choices we make in life reflect back characteristics in our demeanor and how we are present to each other. Having I-awareness of correlation in how we correspond and are coherent in our environment can help define the better way of being. These concepts while experimental are tested to help refine best practices in Ultra-Being attuned, loving and presents an opportunity to explore ideas and agreed upon ways of better relating to the "Weltschloss" (the world we are dwelling in) that affect our "we" experiences.
Examining and exploring (thought gendenkens) the values inherent in the vibe of correspondence and coherence correlates (in theory) to our shared moments, deepest cares and enlightened ideals.
Thus it is our experience of life and each other that we can define “Correspondence Coherence” which pans out from an interplay of how we perceive (supposed) reality that in the end, when refined equate the qualities of how we are in the pursuit of self-mastery and 'Ultra-being' present.
How are you being today in the 'awake dimension' of Weltschloss?
How are you a different better person because of your sense of 'it'?
