With the imminent release of their third album Red, New Zealand hard rockers Devilskin are battening down the hatches and preparing to unleash some positivity through music on a world...
mostra másBass player and founding member Paul Martin joined HEAVY amid the chaos from his home base where he is currently in lockdown as per government wishes.
"After being together for ten years now I think we're starting to get to know each other", he enthused when asked about Red. "I think it's our most cohesive album and certainly our most complex. This album has been begging to be written for a long time. We began with 30 songs and had to whittle it down to 12 - which was like amputating one of your children (laughs). The songs that made the cut, made it for a reason. They all put their hands up and it's weird because the first track on the album is called "Do You See Birds" and it was the very last song we wrote and it kind of didn't get the attention it deserved in the initial stages and didn't really make the cut but myself and the producer really fought for it. We got to record it and once we did Jennie piped up and said 'hey, I like this, it has to be track one on the album' (laughs). The freaky thing is I wrote the lyrics about someone being confined in a room and they can't get out so they are watching birds flying around and seeing the freedom outside that they can't get to. They have been confined and there is the obvious irony in that New Zealand - in fact, the whole world - is in some form of lockdown at the moment".
In the full interview Paul discusses Devilskin's goals for Red and if they achieved them, the personal nature of some of the songs, how it differs musically from their first two albums, what happens to songs that don't make the cut, the title and its relevance, the album artwork, different things the band tried from previous releases, how CoronaVirus has affected the band and their plans for 2020 plus more.
