It’s a merry Christmas with Jonas Olsson, originally from Sweden, who has been a resident of Bengaluru for over a decade and is founder of the all-male choir The Bangalore Men and the all-female Cappella Bangalore. He also heads the vocal department at The Bangalore School of Music. All this besides working at his corporate day job as Head of India Tech Hub at Volvo Cars.
Olsson talks about the strong tradition of choir singing in Sweden and why we must grow the culture beyond Christmas to the rest of the year. He emphasises the need for right musical training so that singers can amplify their voices in the absence of the ubiquitous microphone. The Christmas repertoire of his choir spans the 1300s to the 1960s, with a mix of popular and unusual songs, such as ‘Corpus Christi’ by Norwegian composer Trond Kverno and ‘Tomorrow Shall be My Dancing Day’ by John Gardner. In the past, the choir has performed compositions of Western classical greats including Schubert and Beethoven, besides Gustav Holst's Hymns from the Rig Veda.
