The rise of powerful Mexican cartels, including the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), has deepened Ecuador's involvement, with local gangs acting as proxies, leading to a surge in drug-related violence and corruption. Despite efforts to curb the influence of cartels, Ecuador's political system and law enforcement have been infiltrated, fueling a rise in assassinations, extortion, and money laundering.
