For the 50th anniversary of the Watergate break-in: The untold story of President Richard Nixon, CIA Director Richard Helms, and their volatile shared secrets that ended a presidency.

Scorpions' Dance by intelligence expert and investigative journalist Jefferson Morley reveals the Watergate scandal in a completely new light: as the culmination of a concealed, deadly power struggle between President Richard Nixon and CIA Director Richard Helms.

Nixon and Helms went back decades; both were 1950s Cold Warriors, and both knew secrets about the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba as well as off-the-books American government and CIA plots to remove Fidel Castro and other leaders in Latin America. Both had enough information on each other to ruin their careers.

After the Watergate burglary on June 17, 1972, Nixon was desperate to shut down the FBI's investigation. He sought Helms' support and asked that the CIA intervene—knowing that most of the Watergate burglars were retired CIA agents, contractors, or long-term assets with deep knowledge of the Agency's most sensitive secrets. The two now circled each other like scorpions, defending themselves with the threat of lethal attack. The loser would resign his office in disgrace; the winner, however, would face consequences for the secrets he had kept.

Rigorously researched and dramatically told, Scorpions' Dance uses long-neglected evidence to reveal a new perspective on one of America's most notorious presidential scandals.

7- The Marita Lorenz story is corroborated by Roderick MacKenzie, who was next door at the Cabana Hotel. Oswald didn't visit Mexico City, and that was admitted in later life by David Atlee Phillips. The obvious non-Oswald photographed as Oswald was Ralph Gebb, who was a high school football classmate of LBJ's favorite hitman, namely Mac Wallace. Gebb was an Air Force officer in 1963, on loan from Curtis LeMay. Winston Scott's death was as convenient as Tom Shipman's death at Camp David in Oct. 1963, for which Adm. Burkley urged no autopsy but yes for a quick burial, when he wasn't ditching the Harper Fragment or the shoulder bullet, writing up false affidavits, or urging Dr. Humes to castrate JFK at the end of the Bethesda autopsy. Scott's death was as convenient as that of Dorothy Kilgallen, who was about to publish revelations that "are going to knock your socks off." Scott's death was as convenient as those of Johnny Roselli, Sam Giancana, Charles Nicoletti, George de Mohrenschildt, Roger Craig, Lee Bowers, Ramblin Rose Cheramie, Ed Voebel, Buddy Walthers, and others. All of whom had begun to talk and were in danger of talking more. As soon as Mary Pinchot Meyer was conveniently dead, Angleton was burglarizing her apartment and separately her art studio, fervently hoping to find her diary since as soon as she read the Warren Commission Report she recognized the fingerprints of the CIA all over the JFK hit, per her insider knowledge through ex-husband Cord who had been a supervisor in the assassinations division of the CIA. Angleton was covering up a lot more than Scott's manuscript. Oswald was part of the CIA twins project since before July 7, 1947 when he and a phony mother we saw whining on TV were installed at 101 San Saba in Benbrook, Texas to live a life parallel to that of the real Lee Harvey Oswald living four blocks away. The night of Nov. 23, 1963, the FBI came knocking on "Marguerite Oswald's" motel door asking if she or Marina had ever seen "this man" with a demo photo. No, but she learned the next day "this man" was Jack Ruby.

6- But Nixon knew that if they ran across anything about Nixon being traceable to Dealey Plaza it would also implicate the Cuban exiles and their associates who had been triggermen and planners for Dealey Plaza.  Which would also mean that being motivated to cover up all that to save their own hides they would be coincidentally saving Nixon's bacon too.  So, Nixon took the bait about Howard Hughes inside information leaking to the DNC, burglarized the DNC at Watergate, and had to have his boys come back when one of the bugging microphones conveniently malfunctioned.  The Democrats knew to set a trap for the return visit, and when the undercover cops showed up E. Howard Hunt acting as a lookout across the street didn't know they were cops.  So he couldn't warn the burglars the cops were coming and that's how they got caught.  Then the Democrat apparatus and the media did a slow burn on Nixon, slowly feeding tidbits and then torrents about how Nixon and his operatives were tied in to the Watergate burglary and the cover up.  Nixon was manipulated into doing the break-in and bugging operation, then he was manipulated into covering things up and lying along the way.  The more he struggled, the more he submerged himself in the contrived quicksand and made himself into an unindicted co-conspirator who had to resign and hope for a pardon.  Which helped Jimmy Carter win in 1976. =end=

5- Now Oswald knew how easy sham assassinations were, so he could be cool, calm, and collected sipping his soda on Nov. 22.  Oswald wasn't supposed to have a gun on him (said Ruth Paine's husband Michael) but when he was escaping south to the Texas Theater he heard from people on the bus JFK had been shot.  That wasn't supposed to happen, so Oswald deviated to his rooming house to get his pistol for a little insurance.  In 1972, Nixon was worried about his re-election and whether it might be close like 1960.  The Democrats knew Nixon was paranoid about several things, like something about Cuba for instance.  They didn't know Nixon had ordered the set up of Operation 40 to kill Castro.  They didn't know it had morphed into killing JFK.  But the Democratic Party leadership did know there was something in that mishmash that was a big bugaboo to Nixon.  So, they played a fraternity boy trick on him.  Howard Hughes had a longtime lawyer who had recently started working for the DNC at the Watergate Hotel.  So they had a front man leak a paranoia-inducing story to Nixon's brother Donald.  Donald was told that the former Hughes lawyer had leaked big-deal information to the DNC, and so now the Democrats had the 1972 election in the bag.  Once Nixon heard this scare story, his inner demons made him wonder what all the Democrats knew or could prove about his setting in motion the Operation 40 project that ended up killing JFK.  To find out, Nixon took Cuban exiles and their friends and had them burglarize and bug the DNC headquarters at Watergate.  They were told they were looking for pornography photographs of Democrat big shots having sex with little kids, cf. what Jim Rothstein learned by talking to Frank Sturgis.

4- Ed Lansdale and the Joint Chiefs figured that if JFK wouldn't sacrifice innocents as the pawns in Operation Northwoods, they might as well make JFK the sacrificial pawn and then an enraged nation would bless the invasion of Cuba to get revenge for what appeared to be a Castro hit against JFK.  That's why the CIA took a failed moron (actually, an established moron) by the name of Lee Harvey Oswald and sheep-dipped him all of a sudden as a Castro sympathizer.  He did token activities about the Fair Play for Cuba Committee, punching his ticket with a little token brochure handout here or media interview there.  This was done just enough times to get Oswald on tape being a Castro commie, to tar him later, and then Oswald didn't need to do any further tokenism.  Oswald was confirmed as a CIA employee by the CIA Director McCone memo to Secret Service Director Rowley in March 1964, including confirmation of his spying for the CIA during his Russian phony defector trip.  Oswald didn't know he would be an assassin patsy.  He thought that if he stood around at the book depository, others would harmlessly buzz bullets past JFK's head, JFK would get mad at him the alleged Castro sympathizer. Then JFK would be motivated to invade Cuba for real and Oswald would get big kudos points from the CIA for being the spiffy spy-boy who faked JFK into invading Cuba for real.  That's why they had Oswald first practice another sham assassination on Gen. Walker.  While Oswald stood around observing, one guy shot a sham shot through Walker's window while his lookout covered his hindside.  Oswald walked off to his escape bus (with no rifle since his wasn't there) and a neighborhood kid peeking over a fence saw the Walker sniper drive off to the left while his lookout backup man drove off to the right.

3-  They recruited their best sniper assassins from CIA Cuban exile training camps around the Caribbean.  Guys who were known, proven, accurate, and able to keep their mouths shut.  They wanted personnel with established Mafia criminal histories and who had become CIA employees.  That way it would be difficult for the CIA to doublecross any of them or lapse security for them.  The star candidates were assembled at the LiCavoli Ranch in Arizona, then trans-shipped to Clint Murchison ranchos in Mexico at Oaxaca and San Luis Potosi for practice sniping at limousines. One of the major training supervisors was Rip Robertson, who had been the second person on shore for the Bay of Pigs and had a definite ax to grind with the Kennedy brothers.  Robertson was in Dealey Plaza on Nov. 22, tipping his hat to JFK a few seconds before his brains were blasted out as the chosen method of ironic revenge.  Ed Lansdale was at Dealey Plaza also.  In spring 1962 JFK refused to authorize Lansdale's Operation Northwoods, which would have been a false flag attack on Florida by friendlies disguised as Cuban Army personnel supposedly sent by Castro to attack the United States.  It would have involved a dozen or so innocent Floridians and Cuban exiles being killed to whip up the anger for revenge invasion from US citizenry.

2- The mafia reps didn't say they were big shots, only pretending to be mid-level intermediaries. But all was pleasant smiles and common interests, so they agreed to meet again in Florida. Meanwhile, Maheu ran across a Life Magazine article about the Mafia, and holy-moly learned who he had been talking to when he saw their pictures. On the next visit, he levelled with Giancana and Trafficante, and with their covers blown now everybody knew it was brass tacks time. The Mafia boys were delighted the government needed their help, with the CIA now having no assets left in Cuba. Castro was too efficient and all their agents and informants had been neutralized. So if the Mafia was needed to do favors for the government, this meant the government would have to tone down any Mafia prosecutions in return. And, the mafiosi volunteered to work for free as a patriotic service. After all, they wanted Castro dead for their own reasons of investment and financial prosperity in Cuba with casinos, drugs, and prostitution. But, they still needed to know the CIA was truly involved and was not going to be doublecrossing them. So, they insisted on documentation. The next meet-up was in Los Angeles, and the CIA sent a key rep from their assassinations division to vouch for CIA sponsorship. The mafia guys were impressed and now committed to being on board. They made sure to recruit 40 guys toward killing Castro, hence the name Operation 40.

1- Late in 1958, Nelson Rockefeller announced he would not be running for president. Nixon knew this meant he had the Republican nomination sewed up for 1960, and having been Vice President he esteemed himself most likely to be elected to the presidency. So, he got to work setting up a system where he could snap his fingers and have Castro rubbed out. Nixon knew Pentagon people leaked too much, so he phoned Howard Hughes on a secure telephone to have Hughes set up a Castro assassination team. Hughes wasn't born yesterday and didn't want to say "yes" on the phone so that Nixon could get him on tape. But Howard Hughes did put his Man Friday Robert Maheu on the task. Maheu knew to contact Johnny Roselli, the Chicago mafia's man for the Los Angeles and Las Vegas areas. Johnny Roselli got in touch with his boss Sam Giancana, and Sam Giancana knew the only way to work through Florida to get to Cuba would be to pull Santo Trafficante on board. Maheu, Roselli, Giancana, and Trafficante had their first sit down at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Florida, and nobody trusted anybody else. Maheu said he represented rich industrialists, who wanted back into the business end of Cuba. He didn't want the mafiosi to know the government was involved.
