During the first day of Kouri Richins' preliminary hearing, Summit County prosecutors presented evidence to determine if there is enough to take the case to trial. The hearing began with testimony from Detective Jeff O'Driscoll, who detailed the investigation that led to Kouri being named the primary suspect. A significant focus of the day's testimony was on digital evidence, with private investigator Christopher Kotrodimos discussing deleted data from Kouri’s devices and communications between her, a housekeeper (who allegedly supplied her with fentanyl), and a paramour. Kotrodimos also noted that his own credentials in digital forensics had not been renewed since 2017, which the defense highlighted to question the reliability of his testimony.

Additionally, Brooke Karrington, a forensic accountant, testified about Kouri's financial activities, suggesting a potential financial motive for the alleged murder. Karrington reviewed various financial documents and highlighted multiple questionable transactions, including loans taken out using Eric's name without his direct knowledge and significant debts tied to Kouri's real estate ventures. The defense challenged the thoroughness of Karrington’s analysis and argued that there could have been an understanding between Kouri and Eric regarding their finances.

The preliminary hearing is set to continue over several days to determine if the case will proceed to trial.
