The Uniting Oden: A Family Story

Story Transcript:
Ja: 和也はこれほど美しい光景を見たことがなかった。
En: Kazuya had never seen such a beautiful sight.

Ja: 家族が一緒に台所で働いているのを見て、彼の顔の笑顔は、彼が満足していることをすべての人に伝えました。
En: As he watched his family work together in the kitchen, the smile on his face told all who saw him that he was content.

Ja: 調理中の伝統的な和食の豊かな香りが、空気を暖かさと興奮で満たしました。
En: The rich smells of the traditional Japanese meal that was being cooked filled the air with a warmth and excitement that was palpable.

En: In the center of the kitchen was the heart of the family, Kazuya's grandmother, Makiko, who was stirring the pot of miso soup.

En: Kazuya had been born in Nagoya, Japan and although he had traveled a fair bit in his life, he had never felt more at home anywhere else.

En: Growing up, he had heard stories of his family's traditional recipes, but this was the first time he had been part of making one.

En: As he watched his parents and grandmother work, he couldn't help but smile as he remembered all the times he had heard stories of their childhood in Japan and the many stories they had shared while they cooked meals together.

En: The family was making a traditional Japanese meal called oden.

En: All of these things were simmered for hours in a pot of dashi, a broth usually made with bonito flakes or kelp.
