Dare to Care in The Workplace

  • The Resilience Plan: A Strategic Approach to Mental Fitness with Dr. Marie-Hélène Pelletier (Part Two)

28 MAY. 2024 · In the second part of this episode, Kathleen and guest Dr. Marie Hélène Pelletier dive deeper into the topic of burnout in the workplace. Dr. Pelletier explains that burnout is defined by the World Health Organization as an occupational phenomenon with three main characteristics - exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced professional efficacy. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing the early signs of burnout, such as reduced energy, disengagement, and tasks starting to fall through the cracks, before they progress to full-blown burnout with exhaustion and cynicism. Catching burnout early makes it easier to course-correct. Dr. Pelletier advises taking small, personalized actions to regain a sense of control and self-efficacy, which can help rebuild hope and counter cynicism. However, she acknowledges that sometimes an unhealthy workplace system may require leaving the organization. The conversation also touches on embracing vulnerability as a leader to create an environment where employees feel comfortable bringing their whole selves to work. Dr. Pelletier suggests starting small by sharing something personal in team interactions. Overall, the episode provides insights for individuals on strategically managing their resilience through micro-changes, as well as guidance for organizations on supporting employee mental health and preventing burnout.

  • The Resilience Plan: A Strategic Approach to Mental Fitness with Dr. Marie-Hélène Pelletier (Part One)

21 MAY. 2024 · In this episode of Dare to Care in the Workplace, Kathleen welcomes Dr. Marie-Hélène Pelletier, author of The Resilience Plan. Dr. Pelletier shares her journey from becoming a registered psychologist to exploring leadership, management, and the intersection of psychology and business. The two discuss the concept of resilience. Dr. Pelletier explains that resilience is not a personality trait, but rather the ability to navigate adversity and demands while growing stronger. She emphasizes that resilience is a state that can be developed strategically, much like businesses develop strategies for new products and services. Dr. Pelletier outlines four key factors for resilience: exercise, nutrition, sleep, and spending time with enjoyable people. However, she notes that the challenge lies in implementing these factors amidst the demands of modern life. Her book, The Resilience Plan, offers a strategic approach to cultivating personal resilience. The conversation also explores how leaders and organizations can support employees' mental health. Dr. Pelletier advises leaders to build trust, share vulnerability appropriately, be aware of available resources, and develop their resilience plan as a competitive advantage.
